The Good Cinnamon


Today I want to talk about the benefits of cinnamon since the season is coming (`tis the season to be jolly) and we will start to add this spice to different desserts or drinks. What most people do not know is that there are two types of cinnamon, one of which may produce more harm than good:

  1. Ceylon cinnamon: Also known as "true" cinnamon.

  2. Cassia cinnamon: This is the cheaper version of cinnamon which is most commonly found in supermarkets and is toxic.

The good cinnamon, the Ceylon cinnamon has many benefits and I will give you below just some of them:

  • It has powerful antioxidants.

  • It helps the body fight infections and repair tissue damage.

  • Cinnamon has been linked with reduced risk of heart disease..

  • It reduces levels of total cholesterol.

  • Ceylon helps to protect neurons, normalize neurotransmitter levels and improve motor function.

As I mentioned above, unfortunately the Cassia cinnamon may cause problems when large doses are consumed. These being said, it is very important to be able to differentiate the two types of cinnamon since even the persons selling it in herbal store do not know which is the good cinnamon! I was shocked when the person selling was confused when I asked if this is the good cinnamon or the cassia one. So, it is up to us to know what we buy in case we really want to take care of our bodies and our health.

The Cassia is typically darker and has a much more pungent flavor. Ceylon cinnamon is considered a more delicate spice because of it's quality and sweeter taste. Another difference is that the Ceylon cinnamon has a thinner bark than cassia cinnamon and is composed of multiple layers. Ceylon cinnamon`s bark will be smoother than the rougher Cassia bark. Look for the cinnamon`s origin, if it came from China or Vietnam it indicates that it is Cassia. See whether the origin is Sri Lanka, India or Ceylon(the British Colony) then it is Ceylon cinnamon.

Astazi vorbim despre beneficiile pe care scortisoara le are, intrucat se apropie sezonul (Sarbatorile vin!) in care vom incepe sa adaugam scortisoara atat in deserturi, cat si in unele bauturi. Ceea ce nu multi oameni stiu, este ca exista doua tipuri de scortisoara, iar una dintre ele produce mai mult rau decat bine atunci cand este consumata:

  1. Scortisoara Ceylon: scortisoara buna

  2. Scortisoara Cassia: aceasta este versiunea mai ieftina a scortisoarei, cea care se gaseste adesea in magazine si care este toxica.

Scortisoara Ceylon are multe beneficii dintre care voi enumera cateva:

Dupa cum am mentionat mai sus, din pacate scortisoara Cassia cauzeaza probleme in loc sa faca bine, atunci cand sunt consumate cantitati mari. Acest tip de scortisoara contine cumarina, o toxina care afecteaza ficatul provocand cancer.

Acestea fiind spuse, este foarte important sa facem diferenta intre cele doua tipuri de scortisoara pentru ca de cele mai multe ori nici persoanele care vand in magazinele naturiste nu stiu diferenta dintre ele! Am reusit sa fac o vanzatoare confuza in momentul in care am intrebat-o daca pachetul respectiv de scortisoara este Ceylon sau Cassia. Astfel, daca vrem sa fim siguri ca ceea ce consumam este bun pentru noi, trebuie sa invatam sa distingem scortisoara buna de cea rea.

Casia este mai inchisa la culoare si are o aroma mult mai puternica fata de Ceylon care este un condiment mai delicat ca aroma si mai dulce la gust. O alta diferenta consta in scoarta pe care o are scortisoara, Ceylon are scoarta mai fina, mai subtire, batoanele fiind formate din fasii multiple, in timp ce Cassia are scoarta mai groasa, cu capetele rulate in interior. Tara de origine este un alt semn distinctiv, Cassia provide din China sau Vietman, in timp ce Ceylon are tara de origine in India sau Sri Lanka.
